San Antonio Walk for PKD

September 14, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 11:30 am

| Free

The San Antonio Walk for PKD is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 2019. The annual Walk for PKD is the signature fundraising event for the PKD Foundation each year and the largest gathering of PKD patients, family, friends and supporters; more than 10,000 strong nationwide. In 2019, 50 inspiring Walks will occur in cities across the nation. Since PKD affects both children and adults, the Walk is a family-oriented event that honors and supports loved ones, creates a sense of community and provides hope for a better tomorrow. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a chronic, genetic disease, causing uncontrolled growth of fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys often leading to kidney failure. It affects all gender, racial and ethnic groups equally.
As the cysts accumulate more fluid, they get bigger and bigger, destroying healthy tissue, which leads to high blood pressure, other complications, and often kidney failure.
A typical kidney is the size of a human fist and weighs about a third of a pound. Polycystic kidneys can be much larger, some growing as large as a football. Kidneys can develop cysts ranging in size from as small as a pinhead to as large as a grapefruit.
There are two types of PKD, both are genetic: autosomal dominant (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive (ARPKD).
ADPKD is the more common type and affects more than 600,000 Americans and 12.4 million people worldwide.
ARPKD is a rare form of the disease that occurs in 1 in 20,000 children worldwide.
There is no cure. But there is hope. Our event is a healthy walk as the food and water is healthy along with a 5K/1K walk/run. This gives children and adults the opportunity for nutritional food and exercise while helping promote awareness for PKD, organ and bone marrow donation. HEB provides fresh fruit for event; juice without additives is provided for children. By the 5K/1K walk/run, the opportunity to provide research for people living with PKD, and opportunity for blood/bone marrow donation, and organ donation, it improves the quality of lives of many residing in the greater San Antonio area. Sarah Forgany, Morning Co-Anchor, and Cristina Blackwell, Great Day SA Hostess from KENS-5 are scheduled to serve as honorary emcees on walk day. They provide information about our walk prior to event as well as post-event. This helped us attract more individuals impacted by PKD to come to our event.
